During World War 2, Michigan became the Arsenal of Democracy producing 25,000 tanks and 8,500 B-24 Bombers. $21 Billion of the war effort spending of $200 Billion went to Michigan companies. Of that $21 Billion, $13 Billion went to Detroit area companies. 613,543 residents served in the armed forces, 10,263 died and 29,321 were injured or wounded. Michigan also housed 5,000 Italian and German Prisoners of War (POW’s) who could work on local farms for 80 cents a day, 6 days a week for a total of 48 hours.
13 residents of Michigan were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during the war.
